I live in Oakland.I would describe the neighborhood I grew up in as a violent and dangerous neighborhood.I would describe myself as someone who tries my best to work hard in class and to be successful to help my family.I would describe myself as a daughter who is sometimes obedient and who tries to focus and to work hard. Some aspects of my identity would be my religion which would be Jehovah Witnesses and the way I act anat how i try to do my best in everything I do even if sometimes it’s hard.

First of all what does dominant narrative mean? Well dominant narrative is when people in position of privilege tell the stories of someone who is not.The first picture I chose for my dominant narrative was a picture of a woman with a ketchup bottle and next to her it says, “You mean a woman can open it?” I chose this because many people think of woman as if we were less value than men. And many woman do live up to that stereotype and decide not to break the mold. This is something that affects me because as a woman I would like to be treated with the same respect and value as others.

Another kind of narrative is counter narrative. Counter narratives are stories of the experiences andperspectives of people who are marginalized. One counter narrative I chose was a picture of a woman who’s showing her muscle and she’s saying,”We can do it!” I chose this picture because it was a good picture to show that even though there’s some stereotypes that are put for woman it’s us who choose if we’re going to live under that stereotype or if we’re going to be the ones who go over people’s expectations. This is something that’s important to me because i would like people to treat me equally.

Also a picture that I chose to put on the inside of my shadowbox was a picture of my family. My mom, dad, sister, and my cousins and uncles. Family is really important to me because they’re the ones who teach us valuable lessons that will help us in life. They show us how to appreciate what we have and to always respect others. This is a big part of my identity because my family is what makes me up they have taught me to be who I am right now.

In conclusion people see me as someone who tries their best to focus and to do my best in everything. If people really knew me they would know that I make sure that nothing I do bothers other people and that family is important to me. Telling the story of who i really am is important because if people start to draw conclusions about me then I have to be the one who corrects them. What I learned this unit is that there are many dominant narrative’s of people’s race, ethnicity, and nationality but that we have to be the ones who stop the stereotyping and marginalizing others.
